Inclined Platform Lift (“IPL”)
Inclined Platform Lifts* (“IPL”) are like a Chair Lift (Stair Lift), but they have a platform to carry a wheelchair or scooter. An Inclined Platform Lift normally has a weight capacity of approximately 550 lbs. These lifts are normally used commercially in schools, public buildings, or Churches due to the space requirements of the lift. When these lifts are unfolded in the ride position, the platform and mechanism occupy a minimum space of approximately 37”W by 36”L for the smallest platform size of 26.5”W x 36”L. At the base of the stairs, the platform requires a minimum open space from the bottom step of 54” to 75”.
Measurements and weight capacity will vary based on the manufacturer and platform size. Inclined Platform Lifts are mounted to both the stair treads and the stairway wall. In some cases, the stairway wall must be opened and reinforced with wood to support the load of the Inclined Platform Lift. Most homes do not have the staircase width or bottom landing clear space to accommodate an Inclined Platform Lift.
