According to the AARP, nearly 90 percent of surveyed adults want to age in place. Aging in place refers to the concept of empowering seniors and older adults to remain in their own homes and communities for as long as possible, rather than moving to assisted living facilities or nursing homes. Nearly 9 in10 Americans between the ages of 50 and 80 surveyed in an AARP sponsored study said they would like to age in the comfort of home, but only 15% have given what the study characterized as “a lot” of thought on how to make that possible.
Mobility products are essential in achieving the goal of aging in place, as they can help older adults maintain their independence and safety at home. These products are designed to address various challenges that can arise with age, allowing individuals to continue living comfortably and safely in familiar surroundings.
As people age, falling becomes more of a concern. According to the CDC, about 81 percent of bathroom injuries are from slip and fall accidents. One of the most commonly used aging in place mobility products is grab bars. Installed in strategic locations like bathrooms and hallways, grab bars provide essential support for seniors. They offer stability and confidence when standing up from a chair, getting in and out of the bathtub, or navigating through slippery areas. Grab bars are easy to install and can significantly reduce the risk of falls.
Another important mobility product is the shower or bath seat. These sturdy seats are designed to fit inside the shower or bathtub, allowing seniors to sit comfortably while bathing. They are especially useful for those who may have difficulty standing for extended periods or have balance issues. Shower seats promote safety and independence in personal hygiene routines.
In addition to these, stairlifts, mobility scooters, and walkers are other mobility products that can greatly assist seniors in aging in place. Stairlifts provide a solution for multi-story homes, allowing individuals to navigate stairs safely. Mobility scooters offer greater mobility outdoors, enabling seniors to run errands and enjoy outdoor activities. Walkers provide support and balance when walking, reducing the risk of falls and helping seniors maintain an active lifestyle.
Overall, aging in place mobility products contribute to the well-being and autonomy of older adults by addressing mobility challenges and enhancing their ability to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. These products not only provide practical assistance but also offer peace of mind to seniors and their families, knowing that safety and comfort are prioritized in their living environment.
