Common Misconceptions:

Stairlifts seem cheaper online.

Initially, when you are researching stair lift costs, they may seem cheaper to purchase online because they lead with pricing for a used stair lift without warranty, shipping, or installation.  Once you add all these items to the online store, the price is often higher than if you were to purchase locally.  The main problems with purchasing a stairlift online are installation and service after the sale.  You should not want Chuck and a truck to install your stairlift for many reasons, but the most horrific reason is the death of Oliver Mapp of Morecambe, Lancashire.  His death was reported in BBC News, UK, on July 10, 2007, in “Boy’s Stairlift Death Accidental.”  His death was due to the incorrect installation of a stair lift by an untrained person.

Eventually, your stair lift will need maintenance and repair.  Online sellers often do not have a local repair person in your area.  Ask for the local repair person’s name and phone number before buying, and then call them to confirm they will repair your stairlift.  If you have problems with your stair lift in the future, the online seller will direct you to the manufacturer, the manufacturer will not sell parts to end-users due to liability so they will direct you to a local dealer.  Local dealers are hesitant to repair your stair lift because once they touch it, they take total liability for the stair lift.

Another misconception is that online retailers are also the manufacturer.

Manufacturers sometimes provide private label star lifts to online retailers, meaning a manufacturer will put the name of the online retailer on the stair lift on the factory floor. If you look carefully at online pictures, you will notice the same stair lift with a variety of names. The stair lifts may have minor cosmetic differences but look at the rail and carriage to see the similarities. The manufacturers selling stair lifts in the United States are AccessBBD, Acorn, Bruno, Handicare, Harmar, Hawle, Merits, Savaria, Stannah, and Staying at Home.

Why do online retailers claim to be the manufacturer? It gives them credibility.

The consumer thinks that the online retailer is a stable huge company with a manufacturing plant. The reality is a bunch of people at a Call Center selling a stair lift that they are not going to be there to install or to service. Eventually all stair lifts will need maintenance or repair. Who are you going to call? Know before you buy a stair lift.
